If you've worked anywhere near web design, print layout, or CMS templates, you've seen it: "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit..." It looks vaguely Latin, reads as nonsense, and shows up in mockups everywhere. Here's where it actually comes from and when you should reach for something else.
Where Lorem Ipsum Comes From
The text is derived from a genuine passage of Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum ("On the Ends of Good and Evil"), written in 45 BC — a real work of Latin philosophy. Sometime in the 1500s, a printer scrambled a section of it (dropping and rearranging words) to create a type specimen sheet — a sample used to show off a typeface. That scrambled passage stuck, and it's been reused, copied, and further mangled ever since, including in the 1960s when it appeared on Letraset sheets and, later, in early desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker.
Because of the centuries of scrambling, it isn't grammatically correct or meaningfully translatable Latin — it just looks like language.
Why Designers Still Use It
Lorem Ipsum has a roughly natural distribution of short and long words, sentence lengths, and punctuation — closer to real prose than something like "text text text text" would be. That makes it useful for:
- Typography testing — seeing how a typeface, size, and line height actually look set in running text
- Layout exploration — checking column widths, spacing, and text-to-whitespace ratio early in a design
- Client presentations — letting a client evaluate a visual direction without getting distracted or opinionated about placeholder copy

Where It Goes Wrong
The biggest risk is exactly what makes it useful: it's too uniform. Real content varies unpredictably — a headline might run to two lines instead of one, a name might be much longer than the placeholder, a product description might be a single short sentence instead of a full paragraph. A layout that looks clean with evenly-sized Lorem Ipsum blocks can visibly break the moment real content goes in.
The other risk is simpler and more common: placeholder text that never gets replaced. Shipping "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet" to a production site or a client's final PDF is one of the most common — and most visible — QA misses in design and development work.
What to Use Instead, and When
- Very early layout sketches: Lorem Ipsum is fine — you're testing proportions, not content.
- Client-facing mockups and final review passes: use real or realistic representative copy with genuine length variation, not uniform placeholder blocks.
- Final QA before launch: search the entire project for "lorem ipsum" as a literal pre-launch checklist item.
