This calculator defaults to 200 words per minute, the commonly cited average adult silent-reading speed, but you can switch between slow (150 wpm), average (200 wpm), and fast (250 wpm), or enter a custom speed.
Reading time = word count divided by reading speed in words per minute. For example, 1,000 words at 200 words per minute takes 5 minutes.
Different sites use different assumed reading speeds (commonly 200-265 words per minute) and some round up more aggressively than others, so the same article can show a different estimate on different platforms.
Many publishers find it helps set reader expectations and can slightly improve engagement, since readers know upfront how much time an article will take. It's optional and works best on longer-form content.
